The CW Picks Up Riverdale For Pilot

by on January 30, 2016

The CW network has picked up “Riverdale” for a pilot episode this year and potential series next year.

“Riverdale” – the hometown of the iconic “Archie” comic book series – is set in the present day and based on the Archie Comics characters, primarily Archie, Betty, Veronica, Jughead and their friends, who explore small town life — and the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s seemingly wholesome façade.

Will this be animated or live action?

Either way, I'm sure that, if Archie Comics has anything to say about it, the show (which presumably will air on prime time) will be family friendly in some way, after what happened with the Josie and the Pussycats movie (the studio was forced to release an "edited for family viewing" version on home video). OTOH, I don't like the idea of "the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s seemingly wholesome façade.". That suggests either a darker and edgier deconstruction or an otherwise in-name-only rendition. Let me just say that I hope they don't:

-Turn Betty and Veronica into Krystle and Alexis (or similar characters with a similar destructive "relationship")…

    -Make Jughead a total idiot…

-Make Reggie the stereotypical "jerk jock" (well, he kind of was anyway, but I mean without his redeeming qualities)…

-Make Big Ethel "man crazy" (she is/was only "Jughead crazy").

-Make Moose a "special needs" student (e.g., "autistic", etc).

…among other "teen drama" stereotypes (and "teen comedy" ones as well, for that matter). Otherwise, I can only cancellation staring into this show's face.
