Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino appeared at San Diego Comic-Con not just to plug their respective separate projects but to reveal the next chapter in the Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novel series (which will be called “Smoke and Shadow”). They also revealed Dark Horse, who publishes the Avatar comics as well as the artbooks for the series, would be launching a Legend of Korra graphic novel series as well.
Since the Avatar: The Last Airbender comics have done so well for the company, it wasn’t a stretch to see this happening as the next step, but the big question was… will we finally get to see what happens after Korra and Asami enter the Spirit Portal?
Mike and Bryan answered that question immediately by revealing the cover painting and confirming there will be Korrasami, and lots of it! The audience erupted in cheers. DiMartino will be personally writing the series and Konietzko will be consulting on the art.
They also revealed the fourth and final Legend of Korra artbook would be published soon. There was no announced release date for the first Korra comic, but the artbook now has a confirmed street date of September 15. In addition, something called “Avatar: The Last Airbender: The Poster Collection” would be released before then, on August 4.
Three volumes in the new Korra series are planned so far.
