SDCC2010: Marvel Gets Animated

by on July 25, 2010

With Jeph Loeb now at the helm of Marvel Entertainment’s television division, Marvel announced their upcoming animated slate for 2010 and 2011 and previewed their new and returning shows at the 2010 San Diego Comic Con. Here are the highlights:

  • Jeph Loeb talked about Marvel’s growth and that Marvel would be bringing live-action television shows to the forefront as well as animated shows.
  • Doctor Doom, or rather voice actor Charlie Adler, attempted to hijack the the panel. Adler was then interrupted by the living legend, Stan Lee, voicing the Mayor of Super Hero City. Tom Kenny (Super Hero Squad’s Iron Man voice actor) then took over to make some announcements and play some games with fans in attendance.
  • As announced earlier, season 2 of Iron Man: Armored Adventures will be broadcast on Nicktoons in Spring 2011.
  • New character designs from Iron Man: Armored Adventures were shown for Black Widow, Iron Monger, and Titanium Man, who will be appearing in season 2.
  • A trailer was shown for the Wolverine And The X-Men: The Complete Series box set, coming on DVD and Blu-ray from Lionsgate on October 12, 2010.
  • An amazing trailer was shown for the Iron Man anime series. Tom Kenny prematurely let it slip that the series will be broadcast on G4.
  • A new trailer was shown for the Marvel Super Hero Squad Online MMOG. A trailer was also shown for the 3D action-adveture game Marvel Super Hero Squad: Infinity Gauntlet, due out in November from THQ. Charlie Adler was announced as the voice-over director for the new game. Adler returned to the panel and, in the voice of Doctor Doom’s mother Coco Von Doom, ordered fans to play the game if they do not get off their butts.
  • The next trailer was for the first DVD release for Marvel Super Hero Squad, now out from Shout Factory.
  • Season 2 of Marvel Super Hero Squad was announced. The new season will focus on Thanos as the show’s new main villain.
  • Jim Cummings will be voicing Thanos in the show. The Super Hero Squad is now on the hunt for the Infinity Gauntlet rather than the Infinity Sword. Season 2 will be broadcast on Cartoon Network once again.
  • HERBIE and Scarlet Witch, voiced by Tara Strong, will be joining the team.
  • New celebrity guest stars on Super Hero Squad will include: Jane Lynch as Nebula, Jim Parsons, as Nightmare, Adam West as Nighthawk, Ty Burrell as Captain Marvel, and Katee Sackhoff as She-Hulk. Designs on the show for the aforementioned characters were also shown.
  • A trailer was shown for the second season. The trailer featured many fights between the Squad, the villains, and Thanos in space. Galactus will also be returning.
  • The panel ended with a new trailer for the animated series, Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, set to air on the fall on Disney XD. The series promises to feature an amazing amount of Marvel super heroes and villains.

Interestingly enough, no footage or trailers were shown for the next Lionsgate/Marvel animated movie release Thor: Tales of Asgard. The panel concluded, and fans were advised to check out the premieres of the Iron Man anime and Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes later at the convention and at the Marvel booth on the show floor.
