Mario isn’t the only video game character with a feature film in the works….what will Sonic’s be like? And when is it coming out?
Last year news broke of Sega and Paramount reaching a deal to produce a Sonic the Hedgehog movie. As of today, we know a little more about it….not the plot, but who’s involved in creating it.
Pat Casey and Josh Miller are writing the script; their most recent project was the six existing episodes of Fox’s Golan the Insatiable (which was excellent). The picture will be directed by Jeff Fowler, best known for….actually, he’s never directed a movie before. Prior to this he created the Oscar-nominated short Gopher Broke, which Josh Miller directed (the connections probably led him to this project).
On the producing side we have Neal H. Moritz, Dmitri Johnson and Dan Jevons, with Deadpool director Tim Miller and Toby Ascher serving on high as executive producers. And as I said earlier, no details about the plot have been released, but we know it will be a live-action/CGI hybrid. Perhaps an animated Sonic will face off against a real egg-shaped man with a giant mustache.
The biggest news is that the film has a solid release date now: November 15, 2019. According to THR, its only competition on that weekend will be a musical comedy starring Melissa McCarthy as “Margie Claus.” Sonic will be fast enough to beat Mario to the box office, but in the end, who will have the better film?
