The Hollywood Reporter has reported that actor Ronald Lee Ermey died early on April 15, 2018, due to complications of pneumonia. He was 74.
Ermey was best known for playing military officers mainly because of his real life expertise as a Staff Sergeant for the United States Marine Corps. He served two tours of duty in Japan and 14 months in Vietnam.
His first acting role was playing a helicopter pilot in 1979’s Apocalypse Now, also serving as technical advisor for director Francis Ford Coppola. He also played a drill instructor in The Boys in Company C. Ermey got a Golden Globe nomination for the role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanley Kubrick’s 1987 masterpiece Full Metal Jacket. Other film credits include Mississippi Burning, X-Men: The Last Stand, Se7en, and the 2003 remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. His TV credits include Scrubs, The X-Files, Tales from the Crypt, and House. He also hosted Mail Call and Lock N’ Load with R. Lee Ermey for the History Channel, and GunnyTime for the Outdoor Channel.
Ermey’s voiceover credits include Sarge, the leader of plastic green Army soldiers in all 3 Toy Story films and the shorts and spinoffs where the character appeared. He was also the voice of Wildcat on Batman: The Brave and the Bold. Other voiceover credits include work on The Simpsons, Family Guy, Invader Zim, Kim Possible and Spongebob Squarepants.
He is survived by his wife and four children.
