Can “Pokemon: I Choose You” be the very best, like no one ever was? Not without the iconic theme song, it can’t….how is the English version, which comes out today, taking care of that?
The theme to the original Pokemon season is one of the most famous anime theme songs in the world, despite being a 4Kids invention that didn’t exist in the Japanese version. For Western viewers, this blast to the past wouldn’t be a complete experience without it. (It could also use Misty and Brock, but we’ll take what we can get.) Fortunately Pokemon USA is aware of this and has commissioned a new version of “Gotta Catch ‘Em All,” originally debuting in 1998. You can hear a good chunk of it in this preview….
At the moment we don’t know who is responsible for this new version. However it doesn’t sound like Jason Paige, who sang the original and would have been fully game to do it again. In fact, he sings it on his own all the time:
Pokemon: I Choose You celebrates the 20th anniversary of the anime by recreating some of the biggest moments from the original season in modern cinematic animation. It’ll be playing in selected theaters on selected nights. This evening is one of them, but if you can’t make it, the film will also screen on November 11th and 14th.
