    Breaks from the football more your thing? Talk about the Super Bowl commercials here!

    For the third straight year, the price tag for an ad hovers around $5 million. Some reports say $5.05 million up from 2017's $5.02 million. The prior two years saw an increase of .5 million each time. Here at toonzone, we have observed a .1 million/year increase from 2005-10, then a .2 jump in 2011. 2012 went up by .5 million and 2013 had .3-.4 million increase.

    A Quiet Place teaser was OK.

    The Jurassic World spot was actually really good - better than the actual trailer!

    Mission: Impossible looks fire, like always.

    Solo looks fine to me. Perhaps all the panic will have been for nothing.

    That Jack in the Box commercial was strange, though I did like Martha Stewart in it.

    The Jeff Goldblum car commercial was the best commercial today.

    EDIT: Alexa commercial was pretty funny too.

    I was liking the Alexa commercial up to the point where it came to the country song.

    That Peyton Manning one was sweet, I like that Lions reference.

    Fascinating article on a trend in some of this year's commercials. Agree or disagree with the article's assertion (I thought it had more comedic ads than they were giving it credit for), it does raise interesting talking points about commercialism, using dead icons for product placement, and playing it safe after an incredibly divisive political year.

    Personally, my favorite ads off the top of my head were:
    -Jeff Goldblum's Jurassic Park/Jeep ad
    -Red M&M turning into Danny DeVito, asking people to eat him and them refusing, and getting hit by a car
    -The fake-out Mr. Clean ad- it's another Tide commercial! My Super Bowl party had a running joke where we predicted that EVERY ad was a covert Tide ad.
    -Morgan Freeman lip syncing "Get Ur Freak On".
    -Australian Tourism, featuring a brief cameo by Paul Hogan, visually dissing a "That's not a knife!" impersonation
    -Febreze: "His Bleep Doesn't Stink".

    Creepiest ad had to be for Sprint.

    I also liked Morgan Freeman's commercial the most, since he is one of my favorite actors and it is nice to see him, especially in a commercial.

    Last night's Super Bowl ads pretty much sums up why I usually press the mute button when they usually air.

    Sure, there's plenty of ads that were fun, like the M&M's ad and the Bud Knight (please let this follow in the footsteps of Left Shark and Puppy Monkey Baby as a Super Bowl reference that gets cosplayed at Katsucon a few days later). However, a good number of comedic ads that others liked sadly either didn't impress me or irritated me big time. Examples of some of the ads that missed the mark:

    • Alexa Loses Her Voice. Quite honestly, this came off as an ad that tried way too hard to be funny, only to fail in the long run.
    • Evelyn. Once the the whole "Sprint is cheaper" aspect appeared, the ad became completely unlikable IMO.
    • Tide Ad. Good god, where do I begin with this? The original ad is one that overstays its welcome after revealing the punchline of it being a Tide ad. However, when the premise repeats itself for the rest of the Super Bowl (and brings in nods to much better ads for other products owned by Procter and Gamble), it basically becomes the next Energizer Bunny in a very bad way (i.e. an overrated ad campaign that wasn't funny to begin with and becomes annoying as hell when the concept is repeated over and over again).

    I want to know the story behind that. I thought there'd be more of a commotion over it this morning. Did someone pay for an ad and then not get it aired?

    I agree with that article 100%. I don't believe for a second that any large corporation -- by definition a machine, designed only for the survival of itself -- cares about me or if I'm born without legs or get cancer or anything. These "sensitive" ads are as phony as a three-dollar-bill and I can't stand them, and they're taking the place of something that could be amusing me. Touchy-feely ads have invaded the Super Bowl over the last few years and I'm sick of it! I demand all the ads be funny!

    I can dig the feel-good message spots moreso than the cheesy grabs for attention.

    Eli Manning & Odell Beckham, Jr. doing a bit from "Dirty Dancing". That was the payoff to that three part in-house message?!? Eli's just as dumb as Peyton when it comes to endorsements.

    Peter Dinklage lip-synching to Busta Rhymes. Morgan Freeman doing the same to Missy Elliott as part of a joint spot for PepsiCo & Frito-Lay. Wack. Word.

    Not feeling that new Crocodile Dundee movie disguised as an ad for Aussie tourism. Paul Hogan has not aged well, and Danny McBride won't do justice with Dundee. Not even Margot Robbie can save this disaster, unlike Legend of Tarzan & Suicide Squad 2 years ago.

    Danny DeVito as a red M & M. Somewhere, Andy Kaufman is smiling.

    Ram's MLK message spot invoked a flashback to Paul Harvey 3-4 years ago and "God created a farmer". Amen.

    I'm not sure the article arrives at the conclusion, from my reading it, it sounds like the author is mad that corporations are getting hesitant to produce "serious" commercials. The author seems to want more advertisements that hammer the viewers with social messages. I don't think it's as "bad" as the author portrays it - I still saw "social message" commercials last night (the Coca Cola commercial, anyone?).

    ...was I the only one expecting a teaser trailer for Season 3 of Stranger Things? They had one for Season 2 last year...

    I was not expecting a Stranger Things 3 trailer....it's too soon. They probably haven't filmed any of it yet.

    That's the first positive reaction to the Ram ad I've seen so far. For those who don't know, they cut King off and this is seriously THE VERY NEXT THING HE SAID:

    “We are so often taken by advertisers. You know, those gentlemen of massive verbal persuasion. Before you know it, you’re just buying that stuff. ‘I’ve got to drive this car because it’s something about this car that makes my car a little better than my neighbor’s car.’” --MLK

    Probably for the best that there wasn't a Season 3 trailer, given the crap that one of the stars was involved in last night (see my post for more details).

    There was a very minor commercial I saw but I cannot remember it and google searches are not helping. I saw one for a mobile game. It looked like a football game mixed with RPG fighting or exploring or something along those lines. Anyone else see that commercial and can remember the name of the game?

    I've got some late thoughts on this I wanted to quick offer... (Just a week late, that's not bad, right?)

    I wasn't prepared for a Han Solo trailer. I didn't know what it was at first. I thought I was going to be a video game trailer.

    Doritos Blaze/Mountain Dew Ice was a great double ad. I actually bought some Mountain Dew Ice last week because it was 99 cents. Is all that happening an option?

    I find that car ads are very hit or miss. But when they hit, they hit. And Jeff Goldblum/Jeep-Jurassic Park hit.

    I thought the It's a Tide Ad series was clever. I chucked every time.

    A movie trailer/ad is always exciting and I'll never turn down a look at Avengers, Jurassic World, etc. My thoughts on the Mission: Impossible ad (best summed up by someone else's thoughts):

    I don't have a link handy, but NBC released a statement saying that all ads aired and no game time was missed. Doesn't really explain it though.
