Netflix & DreamWorks team on new shows including She-Ra and more!

Netflix and DreamWorks Animation Television have announced a whole slate of new shows and some new seasons of returning shows for the next two years, including fresh adaptations of classic comic characters from the pages of Harvey comics and a reboot of She-Ra!

DreamWorks Trolls: The Beat Goes On! – January 19, 2018
Picking up where the film left off, the Netflix original series is an all-new chapter in the the endlessly upbeat adventures of the Trolls as Poppy, Branch and all of Troll Village keep the party going in their fantastical forest home. Executive produced by Matthew Beans (Robot Chicken), the series features Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect) and Amanda Leighton (This Is Us, The Fosters) as the voices of Branch and Poppy with original songs written and produced by Alana Da Fonseca (Pitch Perfect 3).

    She-Ra
From Eisner Award-winning author and executive producer Noelle Stevenson (Lumberjanes, Nimona) comes a modern take on the ‘80s girl power icon for a new generation of young fans. The trailblazing property originally debuted in 1985 to satisfy overwhelming demand for a female lead fantasy series. With Stevenson’s unique voice at the helm, fans are in store for an epic and timely tale that celebrates female friendship and empowerment, lead by a warrior princess tailor made for today. The series will be available to Netflix members worldwide in 2018.

The Boss Baby: Back in Business
Boss Baby, with the help of his big brother and partner-in-crime Tim, continues to navigate the cutthroat corporate jungle gym of Baby Corp, while angling to achieve the near-impossible: the work-life balance of a modern career baby. From Emmy-winning executive producer Brandon Sawyer (Penguins of Madagascar), the series will be available to Netflix members worldwide in 2018.

    Harvey Street Kids
From its never-ending games of kickball to the infinite flavors of its ice cream truck to the greatest climbing tree in the universe, every day on Harvey Street feels like a Saturday. And that’s largely thanks to the Harvey Girls – Audrey, Lotta, and Dot – the block’s self-appointed guardians and the world’s bestest BFFs. They will do whatever it takes to keep Harvey Street the best block to never grow up on and transform every afternoon into a wild adventure. From executive producer Brendan Hay (Dawn of the Croods, The Daily Show with Jon Stewart) and Emmy-nominated supervising producer Aliki Theofilopoulos (Phineas & Ferb, Descendants: Wicked World), the series will be available to Netflix members worldwide in 2018.

The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants
Based on the epic books by Dav Pilkey, DreamWorks The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants follows the adventures of George Beard and Harold Hutchins, two best friends who’ve bonded through their love of pranking, comic books and being the thorns in Principal Krupp’s side. Their fun gets them mixed up in adventures crazier than their outrageous comic books, which is when they call on their greatest creation: Captain Underpants! From Peabody Award and Emmy-winning executive producer Peter Hastings (Animaniacs, Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness), the series will be available to Netflix members worldwide in 2018.

Trollhunters (Part 3) and 3 Below (Second installment of Tales of Arcadia Trilogy)
DreamWorks Trollhunters Part 2, from Guillermo del Toro, premieres on Netflix, on Friday, December 15, with a third and final chapter of the Emmy-winning series set to debut in 2018. 3 Below, the second series in the previously announced Tales of Arcadia trilogy, will premiere in late 2018 and feature two royal teenage aliens and their bodyguard who flee a surprise takeover of their home planet by an evil dictator and crash land in Arcadia. Now on the run from intergalactic bounty hunters, they struggle to blend in and adapt to the bizarre world of high school all the while attempting to repair their ship so they can return and defend their home planet. A final chapter, Wizards, is set to debut in 2019.

I heard about all of these projects earlier this year and last year, but glad to have all of them officially revealed, since this year was lacking in new DWA shows besides Spirit and VeggieTales. Still wish for original series like 3Below and Wizards to pop up though.

With the new she-ra series I wonder if they would include he-man as well. They were going to include she-ra in season 3 of he-man 2002 series but they canceled it after season 2 if I remember correctly

NBCUniversal could end the Netflix partnership in the future and launch a Universal Kids SVOD service of its own that would serve as a companion to the cable channel. It would not only include streaming rights to current shows on the cable channel, but classic family programming (live-action and animated) in the NBCU library, and quite possibly, content exclusive to the streaming service (replacing the Netflix deal and also involving Illumination and Universal Animation Studios).

It’s nice they’re doing something with the Harvey characters. I hope that turns out good.
Glad that Captain Underpants is getting a show, I was hoping they would, and that it’s just as funny as the film.
I hope She-Ra will be good, but they don’t have the characters in Noelle Stevenson’s art style.
The Boss Baby was an alright film, so I’m willing to give the show a try.

I was wondering when we would get a proper He-Man revival, but a new She-Ra cartoon is just as awesome :D.

And Dreamworks continues to successfully turn their movies into cartoons ;).
I wonder if it's too much to hope for that they can get Cam Clarke back as He-Man...

I'm hoping the new She-Ra reboot is similar to the 2002 reboot of He-Man. I really enjoyed the He-Man reboot and I was so upset when She-Ra didn't show up due to the show being cancelled before she could make her appearance. Let's hope this new reboot is good!

A She-Ra reboot being on the list is a big surprise to me; but I'm super excited for that, along with the other new DWA cartoons for Netflix. Both are on a big roll with their collaboration.

So does this DWA deal mean that they own animation production rights to She-Ra through Classic Media?

Not that I’m complaining but could Mattel have some other studio do it?

Well, I’ve been waiting for them to have a new series involving with much of recently released films, it seems like 2018 will be a good year for animation since we been seeing a lot of new shows ranging from CN to Netflix.

The reason why they continue to make shows right after the movies is that they need something to fill between the movie as well as retaining interest in the properties.

Being a huge fan of the Captain Underpants movie, I can’t wait for The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants! With Peter Hastings being behind it, I hope it will be as good as 90’s Warner Brothers cartoons like Animaniacs.

Thing is, I don’t know which voice actors will be returning for the series...some people believe that Thomas Middleditch will reprise his role as Harold, since he was in Penn-Zero, Part Time Hero. I think Nick Kroll may not reprise his role as Professor Poopypants (my favorite character, as you can tell from my avatar and my signature), since he’s been busy with Big Mouth and Operation Finale (yes, I’m a big Nick Kroll fan, too, and I know what he’s been doing for the last few months), but it would be surprising if he did. My theory is that DreamWorks might use the replacement actor from The Professor Poopypants (Totally Original and Supercool) Guide to Being a Villain, who does a pretty decent job of imitating Professor Poopypants’ original voice actor:

I’ve known about the Captain Underpants Netflix show for a few weeks now: some animation blog said it was a show currently in production (it was linked on a Vailskibum94 video about that website saying Teen Titans Go! was ending), then someone found the website of a sound effects editor who worked on the show that stated they worked on it.

As for the other shows, Harvey Street Girls does sound cute, and I might watch it along with She-Ra, and I’m definitely going to watch Trolls: The Beat Goes On! The animation for that show reminds me of something that would’ve come out during my childhood in 2006-2007. I personally found The Boss Baby to be the worst movie of the year, but I might give the new series a try if it looks better than the movie.

If the She-Ra reboot become a success, then I could definitely see a He-Man spinoff happening.

While there are many things that can go right with the upcoming new She-Ra series, there are just as many, if not more things that can go wrong, and considering this is Dreamworks we're talking about, that doesn't show a whole lot of confidence.

In any case, it can only be hoped that it will be the genuine article, and not another tribute/parody (or another dark melodrama that takes itself too seriously).

Then again, if Mattel is the one running the show (like with the Barbie movies), then maybe, just maybe, there might be a better chance of this show being the genuine article. Then again again, part of (repeat: part of) the reason the previous He-Man remake didn't last as long as it could have was (as I understand) because of certain mistakes Mattel had made (e.g., preventing the makers of the show and the comic book from using certain characters).* Then again again again, that was 15 years ago, so maybe they've learned their lesson this time. Still, once the new She-Ra series premieres, we'll see what happens.

*Personally, it's just as well anyway. I mean, Man-At-Arms ("permanently") turning into a Snake Man? I'm sorry, but that really would have been too dark...

It looks like they're keeping her traditional design, more or less, just with a new headpiece (that reminds me a lot of Lady Sif), shoulder pads, a longer sword, and I'm guessing pants/leggings since the skirt seems to open up.

Well, that looks pretty nice. I’m relived it’s not going to look like Lumberjanes.

A Bruce Timm art style would be nice, and that may be somewhat close (though it's hard to gauge from that one shot)...

As long as it doesn't look like "Be Cool Scooby Doo" or something hideous like that...
