I don't know. I haven't actually seen any of the movies, but has Indy done anything that was outstandingly heroic outside of beating up Nazis and hunting temples?

Still, if he's been voted the best, than he probably did deserve to win, and I just need to see the movies then, anyway.

Nice resume, but only one or two actions here seem heroic to me. Still, I'm not gonig to argue Indy's victory with you all. If he deserves to win, then he deserves to win.

    Hmm....
    :)

I would like to add that he didn't actually find the Ark in Area 51. It was just a completely awesome cameo. Also, he:

    -Shoots a ninja
    -Drinks from the Holy Grail
    -Defeats a cult
-Outcools a greaser who is his own son
    -Rides into the sunset

    Good job, Indy.

What about Holmes? I'd argue that he's more iconic than Harry Potter.

I am satisfied with the out come of the top 5. Sure I would have really liked to see Hellboy take the whole thing, but he got a strong second place.

Well, historically speaking, and to previous generations yes

Holmes is iconic in the same way Conan and Tarzan are (and believe me I wanted to list Conan, and yes I'm familiar with pulp and classic literature of previous generations. Actually, I'm starting to like it just as much as anime and manga). I do love a good narrative. If I had to pick a classic literary figure I would have easily picked Tarzan or Conan over Sherlock Holmes, just because my tastes lean that way.

However I decided to leave all pulp hero icons out. Otherwise I would of had to have listed Spawn too as a hero, but he's only a hero some of the time. Got a lot of things working against him. He was a killer in his previous life. He comes from hell. And he mutilates the bad guys instead of offering them a chance for redemption, but if we're talking about hero's who have the largest and most epic amount of obstacles to face, and who are in many ways the most pure of hearts (except batman sometimes), my list still stands.

Plus, my list is kid-friendly for the most part, with exception of perhaps Odysseus. Every hero on the list I made has a certain amount of recognition factor with the current generation, through numerous media sources. Including kids who are 12 and under, which is a huge animation demographic. HUGE.

    D'oh! How could I forget!? :p

(and yes you're right it only had a cameo, but I was in rush in posting the list.)
