A rare one-word Naruto Shippuden title to kick off the arc proper. It's time for Naruto to train in Sage Mode before Pain comes calling. And he will come calling, and quickly...

Also new OP and ED, though it's not like we're gonna see them or anything. Perhaps it's for the best, considering how poorly ending 13 fits this arc (it's not a bad song though).

Opening 7 fits like a glove though.

    Official Naruto: Shippuden Talkback Thread

Opening 7: "Tōmei Datta Sekai" by Motohiro Hata
Ending 13: "Bicycle" by Ore Ska Band

You can find some of the OPs and EDs on the Toonami Digital Arsenal in high quality (seriously, they need to update this).

    Last time on Naruto Shippuden:

Naruto, heart-broken of learning Jiraiya's death by the hands of Pain, walks off and recalls his time with his mentor. Fukasaku shows Jiraiya's chakra-encrypted code to Tsunade who has Shikamaru give to their village's best code breaker in translate. The next day, told that the cipher might be known by something Jiraiya knows, Shikamaru visits Naruto and gives him some peace of mind by revealing that Kurenai is pregnant with Asuma's child and that they should stop being children and become the best of what their mentors saw in them.
No spoilers: No talk of future arcs, events, etc. ESPECIALLY NOW THAT BOTH THE MANGA AND ANIME ARE OVER! All spoiler talk must be taken to the anime forum or through pm! Please have respect for all new viewers or else PAIN will be coming for YOU. Believe it!

Previously: Time to carry on Jiraiya's will Naruto.

Oh yeah, this is the first time in like, ANY dub, that the katakana writing system is ever uttered. Btw, this is what Naruto's talking about:

    See? Like the number "9".

So the 7th opening theme had Toshiyuki Tsuru credited as storyboarder and Hirofumi Suzuki credited as animation director. Tsuru also did the storyboards for episodes 82, 85 & 123 and Hirofumi Suzuki was the character designer for Naruto and Naruto Shippuden.

The 13th ending theme has Koji Masunari credited for storyboards, who was also the director of Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic and Kingdom of Magic anime and the director of the Read or Die OVA and TV series.

    Episode 154: “Decryption”
    Broadcast Date: April 8, 2010
    Adapted from Naruto Chapters 407-409

    It’s a First!

As noted by macattack, this episode debuts a new opening and ending. This writer’s favorite parts: the bridging sequence of Jiraiya writing. The Pains and Konan diving with splash images of the Akatsuki, Team Taka, and the Konoha Ninjas. The fight scenes concerning Sai, Gamabunta, Kakashi, Ino, Hinata, Sakura, and Team Guy. The ending, unless someone corrects me, deals solely with a character outside Team 7: Hinata.

Manga-wise, this would have been the first full appearance of Mount Myoboku, first glimpsed back in the Jiraiya-Pain battle, although the Anime had already introduced the place in the ‘Jiraiya the Gallant’ Arc.

Naruto begins to learn Sage Jitsu as a means to defeat Pain. The Jitsu is explained by Frakusaku; whereas most Ninja’s Jitsus come from their inner mental and physical chakra, Sage Jitsu involves absorbing the outside energies of nature. This nature energy merges with the inner mental and physical energies to form considerable power for the user.

This also begins the running joke about Naruto’s conflict with Ma Toad’s cuisine.

    The Plot thickens…

Everyone gets to work with Jiraiya’s legacies: Shizune autopsies the stolen Pain body. Morino Ibiki will interrogate the Falling Rain Ninja captured by Jiraiya. Naruto, Shikamaru, and Shiho try to decipher the code scarred on Frakasaku’s back.

Naruto identifies the ‘9’ in the code as a katakana (thank you, Hypeathon for the description). Shikamaru and Shiho discover this means the clue lies in Jiraya’s writing. The code numbers are referencing page numbers from Jiraiya’s last novel Make-out Tactics, which Naruto reluctantly proofread. Using the first edition belonging to Kakashi, Shiho makes out a message: “The real one’s not among them.”

Frakasaku remembers Jiraiya’s assertion that Nagato is involved with the Pains due to some intimate conversation shared only by the two of them.

Tsunade considers the Frog Sage’s accurate prophecy of Jiraiya becoming a writer, seeing it as eventually proving beneficial in granting them this code about Pain. She begins to believe in Naruto becoming the Child of Prophecy.

    Remember When (or Not)

The episode begins with a flashback of Frakasaku informing Tsunade and the others of the clues Jiraiya left behind.

Naruto remembers when he had to proofread Jiraiya’s drafts in the middle of the night.

Frakasaku remembers Jiraiya’s analysis about the Pains.

I see Dead People (This will be used whenever a character sees an apparition of a deceased person)

Tsunade sees a vision of Jiraiya walking with a younger Naruto.

    Love, Family, and Friendship

Shiho blushes over Shikamaru’s compliment about her work.
