DreamWorks’ “Home” Surprises With Strong Opening Weekend

by on March 30, 2015

DreamWorks Animation’s new family film Home defied expectations at the box office opening weekend, earning $52.1 million domestically per Box Office Mojo. The movie had been projected for an opening of $30 to $35 million, but instead Home represents the third strongest opening for a non-sequel film from the studio behind Kung Fu Panda ($60.2 million) and Monsters vs. Aliens $59.3 million). Home has also been successful in overseas markets since opening the weekend of March 20, resulting in a total gross of $102 million so far counting the film’s domestic earnings.

The success of Home has been attributed to strong word of mouth and minimal competition as the family film of choice at theaters amid a slew of fare targeted exclusively at older audiences. Home’s opening weekend audience in the U.S. was 57% 25 and under and 60% female, an apparent reflection of the appeal of the little girl Gratuity “Tip” Tucci as the film’s leading human character.
