Crunchyroll Expanding Into Original Content

How do you know you’re huge? When you have the power to produce your own content instead of rent it. Netflix can do it, Hulu can do it…..now Crunchyroll?

The streaming service is now the flagship destination for same-day sub anime premieres in the US, as well as a massive library of anime in general. Crunchyroll announced today they’re diving into original content production in 2019, with the introduction of their first self-produced anime series, High Guardian Spice.

In the past Crunchyroll has partially funded some programs, but never completely on their own. The first new series comes from Ellation Studios, a division of AT&T WarnerMedia.

“With Crunchyroll Originals, we’re looking to showcase animation as an art form, delivering meaningful original content that draws from our strengths,” says Ellation Studios head Margaret Dean. “Raye [Rodriguez]’s team has been inspiring to work with, and we can’t wait for fans to see what we have in store for them.”

High Guardian Spice will launch the Crunchyroll Originals brand, set to produce more content in the months and years ahead — though what that content will look like remains to be seen. “We [will] announce the rest of our slate in the coming weeks.” teases Kun Gao, founder and general manager of Crunchyroll.

All we know about at the moment are these Spice Girls. High Guardian Spice will launch exclusively on Crunchyroll in 2019.
