The latest revelation from the set of WB’s Aquaman movie has everyone asking…whah? What is the big change to Mera’s backstory that significantly alters the state of Aquaman’s life and relationships?
Aquaman has never been the most popular DC superhero, but depending on how his film is received, that could change. The right star vehicle can work wonders with the public — Iron Man, Rocket Raccoon and Black Panther were once treated as obscure. There are, however, two things about Aquaman most people know already:
- He’s the king of Atlantis, and
- He has a wife named Mera.
In some continuities Mera has instead been Aquaman’s steady girlfriend, but generally, she is the one thing about his mythos that remains constant. Not only that, she’s a big part of his backstory, directly connected to his arch-enemy King Nereus of Xebel. Mera was originally betrothed to Nereus, and swam into Atlantis to spy on Aquaman…but ended up falling for him and switching sides. This enraged Nereus and made their war pretty much never-ending.
The actor playing Nereus in the upcoming movie, Dolph Lundgren, casually tossed out a plot detail from the film during an interview with the Las Vegas Review Journal. This time Mera was never in love with Nereus…because he’s her pop.
“It is good to be king. Basically, I try to keep the peace down there along with Amber Heard, who plays my daughter. She’s trying to convince me to join the right side. Then you have Nicole Kidman as Aquaman’s mother. We’re trying to avoid war between the surface [dwellers] and the people of Atlantis.”
Justice League, the movie where Aquaman first appeared, already hinted that things were different in Atlantis. Mera said she was taken in by the Atlanteans as a young girl, so it is already established she was never a spy. It’s too bad — the original backstory would have been interesting to see on the big screen.
