Zhang Songlin, Chinese Animator, 1932 – 2012

Chinese animator and animation director Zhang Songlin passed away on May 8, 2012, at the age of 80 due to cerebral infarction. Songlin’s career in animation began at the Shanghai Animation Film Studio in 1950, moving to directing animated films starting in 1959. He directed the films A Little Swallow and Bee and Earthworm, wrote The Crowing Rooster in Midnight, and was instrumental in the production of the popular short film Scatterbrain and Crosspatch when he was teaching at the Shanghai Film School’s animation department. He also co-founded the China Animation Association in 1985, and served as its vice-president until stepping down in 2007.
