Actor Yvonne Craig passed away on Monday, August 17, 2015, at the age of 78 at her home in Pacific Palisades, CA, due to complications from cancer. In a statement on her official website, Ms. Craig’s family stated that she had been battling breast cancer for two years that had recently metastasized to her liver, but kept her condition private in order to focus her energies on battling the disease.
Yvonne Joyce Craig was born on May 16, 1937, in Taylorville, Illinois, and began her show business career as a ballet dancer, becoming the youngest member to tour with the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo. Her first screen roles began in the late 1950’s. In the 1960’s, she appeared in two Elvis Presley films: It Happened at the Worlds Fair (1963) and Kissin’ Cousins (1964) before landing her signature role as Barbara Gordon/Batgirl in the third season of the 1966 Batman TV series alongside Adam West and Burt Ward. She also made a memorable appearance as the green-skinned dancing girl Marta in the Star Trek episode “Whom Gods Destroy” in 1969, bewitching Captain Kirk and many people watching at home.
After leaving the acting life, Ms. Craig worked as a real estate broker in Hollywood, but returned for a stint as a voice actor in the Nickelodeon animated series Olivia, based on the books by Ian Falconer, where she played the title character’s grandmother.
