Despite lingering power outages on the East Coast in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph earned an estimated $49.1 million in ticket sales in its debut weekend, taking the top spot at the box office by a comfortable margin. Its nearest competitor, Robert Zemeckis’ Flight, opened with almost half the ticket sales at an estimated $25.01 million (although it also opened on nearly half the screens as Wreck-It Ralph and earned slightly more per screen). The opening is the biggest ever for a Disney animated feature film, edging out Tangled‘s $48.8 million (which was probably slightly reduced by its Wednesday opening date), and up on 2005’s Chicken Little ($40.1 mllion).
