Sailor Moon Makaiju Aliens Guide

From Animation News Discussion Cartoon Community - toonzone Animation Wiki

The Makaiju Aliens are the villains of the second story arc (episodes 47-59) in the Sailor Moon metaseries. In the English dub, they are called the Doom Tree Aliens. They were created exclusively for the anime and do not appear in the Sailor Moon manga. Unlike the other villain groups in the series, they are not actively malicious and have no real ultimate goal except to keep their Tree alive and to survive no matter what the cost.

Story of the Makaiju Aliens

Usagi Tsukino and her friends are reborn on Earth after defeating the Dark Kingdom, with their memories of the last year erased. Two new transfer students, Seijūrō and Natsumi, join Usagi's class at Jūban Junior high school, the same school Ami and Makoto attend with Usagi. At the same time, two new enemies appear calling themselves Eiru and An.

Eiru and An had wandered space for years before finding Earth, where they are finally able to find energy to collect for the "Makaiju", so it will continue to thrive and provide them with regenerative energy. To collect the energy for the Makaiju, they drain the life of Humans by using creatures called Cardians. When Luna sees the new danger, she re-awakens Sailor Moon and the rest of the Senshi to fight the new enemy.

These events are never reffered to later in the series, but the alien Fiore, who appears in the Sailor Moon R movie, bears a strong resemblence to Eiru and An's alien race.

The names "Eiru" and "An" combine to sound like the word "alien". In the ADV Films English release of the series, the comparison is taken further when their names are rendered as "Ali" and "En".

Eiru and An have a very "Adam and Eve" relationship with one another, since they are the only two of their kind left, and may in a sense be considered siblings as well as romantic partners.

Eiru

Eiru, written as "Ali" in the ADV release and called "Alan Granger" in the English dub, takes on the identity of Seijūrō Ginga and lives in Jūban Odyssey Apartments with his "sister". He eventually develops a crush on Usagi, and starts to constantly try and win her over, much to the displeasure of An. Eiru uses his flute to summon Cardians, and lets An choose which he will summon.

In his given name, Seijūrō, the first kanji means "star" (sei), the second means "ten" (juu), and the last is a counter for sons (rou). Thus his name could possibly mean something like "Tenth Son of The Stars". The Kanji for his surname, Ginga, means "galaxy".

Eiru is voiced by Hikaru Midorikawa (who also provided the voice for Fiore in "Sailor Moon R: The Movie") in the original Japanese anime, and by Vince Corazza (who provided the third voice of Tuxedo Kamen) in the English dub.

An

An, written as "En" in the ADV release and called "Ann Granger" in the English dub, takes on the identity of Natsumi Ginga and lives in Jūban Odyssey Apartments with her "brother". She develops a crush on Mamoru, much to the unhappiness of Eiru and Usagi, and constantly tries to win her over.

The first kanji of her given name, Natsumi, means "summer" (natsu), and the second means "beauty" (mi). The kanji for her surname, Ginga, means "galaxy".

An is voiced by Yumi Tōma (who also provides the voice of the Xenian Flower in "Sailor Moon R: The Movie") in the original Japanese anime, and by Sabrina Grdevich in the English dub.
