Digimon Adventure is an anime series based on the Digimon media franchise. It is the first in a long line of series based on the franchise, and is largely responsible for Digimon's burst of popularity and introduction to North America. Prior to this series, Digimon only existed a series of handheld pets and a Playstation Game. The series follows the adventures of seven children known as the Digidestined who are transported from their summer camp into the Digital World in order to combat the forces that threaten to destroy both worlds.
Plot Synopis
The digidestined are a group of children (their numbers go from seven to eight throughout the course of the series) who were chosen to save both the Digital World (an alternate universe made of computer data; the home of the Digimon) and their world from being destroyed by a mysterious force (which later identifies itself as Apocalymon). The children are each given a Digimon partner (collectively refered to as the Chosen Digimon) with specific powers and skills. The Digimon can change their form (called Digivolving) with a device called a Digivice (an object given to each of the chosen children before they began their journey). This allows them to become bigger and more powerful, but after a time it tires them out and they revert back to their standard form. It is possible for the Digimon to evolve even higher with the use of Tags and Crests; much of the shows second story arc is dedicated to the children searching for the crests.
The Digital World is portrayed as an alternate universe, made up of several snippets of data taken from the real world. For example early in the series the children come across a set of phone booths-with voices on the other end-that could not be used to call anyone. They also find a set of telephone poles, which connect to nothing except each other.
The series starts out on a small continent called File Island, and follows the quest of the Digidestined to defeat the evil digimon that have taken over different parts of the Digital World.
Legacy
The Digimon Adventure series proved quite popular, being dubbed into english and shown on Fox Kids, ABC Family and Toon Disney. This popularity led to the creation of a sequel, Digimon Adventure 02, which continued the events of the first series with a new set of digidestined (although the former ones appear sporadically throughout the series). After 02 ended another series was produced, Digimon Tamers. This show, however, took place in a different continunuity then that of the first two (in fact, some of the characters in Tamers are shown watching the Digimon Adventure series on TV). Future series, like Digimon Frontier and Digimon Data Squad, were each set in their own continunuities.
In Japan, three seperate films based on Digimon Adventure and 02 were made; the first of these show how the original eight children became Digidestined; the second took place after Digimon Adventure but before 02; and the third took place during 02. These three films were connected for a North American release as Digimon: The Movie.
Although most of the Digimon video-games exist in their own continunuities, the following use characters from the show:
