Media giant Viacom has filed a billion lawsuit against Internet search giant Google over unauthorized clips from Viacom properties posted on the YouTube video sharing site (free registration required). According to the lawsuit, Google has “deliberately chosen not to take reasonable precautions” to prevent unauthorized content from being posted from Viacom properties such as South Park and SpongeBob SquarePants. Google attorneys expressed confidence that the case would eventually go in their favor, with a separate article in the Los Angeles Times detailing the steps Google took to prevent copyrighted content from being posted on YouTube.
