by on February 14, 2014

Vanity Fair has examined a set of alumni from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) whose work has defined animation for a generation through work for Disney, DreamWorks, Fox, Laika, and other studios. The list of the alumni include John Lasseter, Tim Burton, Henry Selick, John Musker, Brad Bird, Gary Trousdale, and Genndy Tartakovsky, all of whom attended the program together although they often graduated in different years. The article quotes a statistic that graduates of CalArts have generated more than $26 billion at the box office since 1985, and their films have racked up numerous critical accolades and industry awards as well. The article covers Walt Disney’s hand in the creation of CalArts through to the experiences of some of its most famous graduates, many of whom were interviewed for the article.
