US Release Confirmed For Dragon Quest XI

by on July 28, 2017

Ready to squish some smiley-faced Slimes? Square-Enix confirmed today that the latest chapter in the Dragon Quest series, the eleventh, WILL be given an English translation and sold in the US. Why did Western audiences not get Dragon Quest X translated? Mainly because it was a different type of game — an MMO, which requires server expenses. Dragon Quest XI will be single player.

Yuji Hori made the announcement official in this Twitter video…

Aside from screenshots and videos, we still don’t know much about the plot. Square’s official summary is “the adventure of a hero who must solve the mystery of his fate with the aid of a charming cast of supporting characters,” which could describe any game in the series. But Dragon Quest has never been about innovation — it’s been about oldschool RPG fun.

While Final Fantasy has changed directions multiple times over the years, the same people behind most of the Dragon Quest games are behind this one too: creator Yuji Hori, artist Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama. If there are any real changes, they’re in the fact that this is the first simultaneous console AND handheld release for the series. Both the PS4 and 3DS versions of Dragon Quest XI are the same game, but the 3DS version renders it differently by showing a top screen with modern polygonal visuals and a bottom screen with the same events in classic 2D style. A Switch version is also on the way; we don’t know how it will differ from the other versions — if it does.

Another thing we don’t know is exactly WHAT consoles will be getting Dragon Quest XI over here. “Coming to the West” could mean all three versions, or it could just mean one of them. We will undoubtedly know more in 2018 when Dragon Quest XI is scheduled to be released in America.
