UPDATED: DC To Unveil New Logo May 25

ImageDC Comics has unveiled a new logo to replace its long-running bullet design, as seen here. The logo will premiere on The Return of Donna Troy, scheduled to ship May 25, and will premiere on the company’s full range of titles starting with issues shipping June 1. The new logo is designed to appear on DC properties across all media, including DVDs, TV shows (such as Smallville), and movies. An animated rendition of the logo will premiere before Batman Begins.

This strategy is intended to raise the awareness of the brand, which before was limited to comics. According to Warner Bros. executive Kevin Tsujihara, “There was a level of concern that we weren’t fully utilizing the power of DC.” The move is similar to what Marvel has been doing for several years with their properties. DC had been moving in this direction in recent months, with a Vertigo logo appearing prior to Constantine and DC branding appearing on DVD releases of DC-related animated shows.

The previous “bullet” logo, introduced in late 1976, is evolved from a design dating back to the early 1940s. It is unclear what this new branding will mean for the company’s Vertigo and Johnny DC lines.
