The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the nominees for the 82nd Academy Awards, with Disney/Pixar’s Up becoming the second animated feature film in history to be nominated for Best Picture (competing against Avatar, The Blind Side, District 9, An Education, The Hurt Locker, Inglorious Basterds, Precious, A Serious Man, and Up in the Air). Up also landed a berth in the “Best Animated Feature” category against Coraline, Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Princess and the Frog, and The Secret of Kells.

Up also secured nominations for Music (Original Score), Sound Editing, and Writing (Original Screenplay); Fantastic Mr. Fox will compete with Up for Music (Original Score) along with Avatar, The Hurt Locker, and Sherlock Holmes. The only other animated feature film to be nominated for an Oscar was The Princess and the Frog, getting two Music (Original Song) nominations for “Almost There” and “Down in New Orleans.”

The nominees for Best Short Film (Animated) are “French Roast” (Fabrice O. Joubert), “Granny O’Grimm’s Sleeping Beauty” (Nicky Phelan and Darragh O’Connell), “The Lady and the Reaper (La Dama y la Muerte)” (Javier Recio Gracia), “Logorama” (Nicolas Schmerkin), and “A Matter of Loaf and Death” (Nick Park).

The motion-captured CGI feature Avatar was also a favorite in the nominations, landing a total of 9 (Art Direction, Cinematography, Directing, Film Editing, Music (Original Score), Best Picture, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Visual Effects).
