Unauthorized Animated Disney Characters Appear on North Korean TV

by on July 11, 2012

The New York Times reports that unauthorized versions of copyrighted Walt Disney Company characters appeared on North Korean state-run television on Monday. Costumed versions of Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Tigger, and other Disney characters were seen dancing in front of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, with occasional clips from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Dumbo were projected in the background. While many were wondering what the official corporate response would be, considering Disney’s track record for aggressively protecting its intellectual property, a Disney spokesperson’s only comment was, “This was not licensed or authorized by the Walt Disney Company.”
