Trailer and Stills for Studio Ghibli’s “When Marnie Was There”

by on July 18, 2014

A full-length theatrical trailer has been released for Studio Ghibli’s next film When Marnie Was There, the studio’s first movie produced without input from its founders Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.

The movie is based on the novel of the same name by Joan G. Robinson, which was shortlisted for the Carnegie Medal award in 1967 and was one of director Hayao Miyazaki’s fifty recommended children’s books. The book will receive a new edition in the U.S. by Egmont USA on January 6, 2015. A summary of the book’s story follows:

Anna hasn’t a friend in the world – until she meets Marnie among the sand dunes. But Marnie isn’t all she seems…Sent away from her foster home one long, hot summer to a sleepy Norfolk village by the sea, Anna dreams her days away among the sandhills and marshes. She never expected to meet a friend like Marnie, someone who doesn’t judge Anna for being ordinary and not-even-trying. But no sooner has Anna learned the loveliness of friendship than Marnie vanishes…

Hiromasa Yonebayashi (The Secret World of Arrietty) directed the film and wrote the screenplay with Keiko Niwa (From Up on Poppy Hill, Tales From Earthsea, The Secret World of Arrietty) as well as the film’s character designer and animation director Masashi Ando (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Paprika, Tokyo Godfathers, A Letter to Momo).

When Marnie Was There will open in Japanese theaters on July 19, 2014. Leading up to the film’s release the studio released a number of images from the film through social media, which can be seen below along with the theatrical trailer for the film.
