LA Times on Direct-to-Video Knockoff Industry

The Los Angeles Times has examined the “drafting phenomenon” in the movie industry, where direct-to-video knockoffs of major studio films exploit the studios’ marketing campaigns. Animated family films are frequent subjects for knockoffs, with recent releases including Kiara the Brave and Life’s a Jungle: Africa’s Most Wanted, which are drafting off Pixar’s Brave and DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (and, earlier, in films like Ratatoing, about which the less said the better). The live-action versions of these films often provide fodder for cable networks, with Universal’s Battleship getting knocked-off by American Warships, which then aired on Universal’s SyFy network.
