SyFy’s Sharknado Causes A Twitter Storm

by on July 13, 2013

The SyFy cable network channel debuted “Sharknado” last week – one of a long line of its original B-movie titles that pay homage to classic sci-fi B-movie genre – and the numbers are officially in. While much of America mostly ignored the television movie premiere on July 11 about a global warming-originated shark-infused tornado, celebrities, journalists and pseudo-journalists really liked it, especially if they had a Twitter handle. While only 1.4 million actually watched the movie when it debuted last week, SyFy reported that it was a Twitter hit with 387,000 “social mentions”, making it the most social telecast ever for NBCUniversal [SyFy’s parent network]. So America’s reward for the bad film being a Twitter hit? SyFy will replay “Sharknado” at 7pm [PT/ET] on July 18, 2013…
