It’s photo day at Elmore Junior High and Gumball is upset over the fact that he never looks good when his photo gets taken. Knowing that today’s picture will impact his legacy, he tries to find a way to solve his problem.
Episodes like this have been done many times over the years. They are seldom different from one another, with a character wanting to get a perfect picture only to have something go horribly wrong. What makes these episodes work, then, is their execution. “The Photo” was solidly executed, and it even played with expectations by throwing in several red herrings. Gumball had enough awareness of the plot to suspect that several things would go wrong, and while he was wrong about all of his suspicions, everything came together rather well. I particularly liked Banana Joe in this episode, as his revenge was built up so well that seeing him get casually squished by an unaware Gumball was very amusing. Having Gumball ruin his own photo at the end was kind of predictable, but it worked and I have no real problems with how the episode ended.
Alan was great in this episode. I noted in an earlier recap how great of a guy they made him this season, and this episode carried that forward. I think it’s impossible to dislike him at this point, even if he did go overboard with his niceness as Gumball pointed out. Whoever came up with the idea of having his face look the way that it did in the photographs deserves respect, as it cracked me up, and Gumball’s “handsome” face, while not as funny, was still enough to get a chuckle out of me. This show has always had amazing visuals, and while a few people still prefer how season one looked, episodes like this prove that season two is still capable of doing great things with the visuals that really add to the overall humor of the show. I’m really looking forward to the next episode and I’m glad that this season is continuing to be stellar.
