Review: "Akira" Blu-ray - The Masterwork Back in High Definition

Akira Blu-ray thumbnail

The history of Akira on home video turns out to encapsulate the history of anime on home video in the United States as well. The success of the film in Japan led to the first VHS releases in the early 1990’s, in both dubbed and subtitled versions as well as in full-frame and letterboxed releases. […]

Review: “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2 (UK Edition)”: Divided by Zero

Code Geass S2

In an alternate timeline, the British Isles have stood unchallenged (other than losing said isles and assuming America as their new homeland) and become the ruthless powerhouse that is the Britannian Empire, brutally conquering other countries and rechristening them with the number in which they were taken. In the conquered Japan, Area 11, Britannian teenager […]

Review: "Space Battleship Yamato" Live Action Movie Blu-ray (UK Edition): To Boldly Go Where Mainstream Sci-Fi Has Gone Before

Space Battleship Yamato Susumu Kodai

There’s a pantheon of space opera anime that includes Gundam, Macross, Captain Harlock and Galaxy Express 999, to name a few. Those last two lead us to Space Battleship Yamato, which is arguably the greatest entrant from its co-creator Leiji Matsumoto. Indeed there can arguably be no better benchmark for a story being legendary than […]

Review: "Horizon on the Middle of Nowhere Season 1 (UK Edition)" - Nowhere Near What You'd Expect

thumb-horizonnowhere

Usually I’d offer a brief explanation of the plot’s starting point but on this occasion I find myself more than a bit bewildered. As the adaptation of a later saga in a massive sci-fi epic, Horizon does itself few favours by beginning the show with a hurdle in the form of a four episode ‘introduction’ […]

Review: "Robin Hood" Blu-ray - A Slight But Enjoyable Effort

thumb-robinhoodbluray

Robin Hood isn’t often lumped in with the great Disney animated films, and while I wouldn’t pretend to claim it’s one of my all-time favorites, I genuinely like it and think it deserves some credit. I say this because when you consider much of the competition in the ’70s, it looks amazing. Sure, Ralph Bakshi […]
