Super Mario Bros. Inducted Into The World Video Game Hall of Fame

by on June 4, 2015

The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY has announced the first six inductees for its brand-new World Video Game Hall of Fame, and Super Mario Bros. is one of those six. Final entrants were decided on by a committee of journalists, scholars and video game industry members. The other inductees included Pong, Pac-Man, Tetris, Doom and World of Warcraft.

Launched nearly 30 years ago in the fall of 1985 (nobody knows the exact date of release), Super Mario Bros. is one of the most famous and successful video games of all time, singlehandedly reinvigorating an industry Atari had left for dead three years prior. The game sold over 40 million copies worldwide and made Mario (who was already known from arcade games Donkey Kong and the original Mario Bros) into one of gaming’s biggest icons, a status the plumber would keep to this day.

In honor of Mario’s 30th anniversary, Nintendo will be releasing Mario Maker this fall, allowing anybody to create their own Mario levels from any era in his sidescrolling history and share them with players around the world.
