Is Studio Ghibli On The Cusp Of Calling It Quits?

by on July 21, 2014

With Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement and Toshio Suzuki’s move from film producer to general manager within the studio, rumors have surfaced in Japan that the venerable anime studio may be moving from producing feature films to merely managing their anime assets or creating television productions. Miyazaki’s retirement combined with Suzuki’s change of focus and the exorbitant production costs to produce anime feature films these days has put a financial burden on the studio to hit a home run with every feature film it releases – though this has been difficult to execute.

Studio Ghibli’s current film – “When Marnie Was There” – was released in Japan on July 19, 2014.
