Sony Pondering Partial Sale of Animation and Effects Studios

by on October 31, 2007

The New York Times is reporting that Sony Pictures Entertainment may sell half of its feature animation studio and a larger portion of its digital effects studio (free registration required). Sony Pictures Animation has released two feature films so far (Open Season and Surf’s Up), with two more scheduled for 2009. The article quotes Sony spokesman Jim Kennedy as saying the company was “open to exploring equity partnerships, and it’s no surprise that there is market interest in our visual effects and animation businesses,” but that Sony will “continue to maintain a strong commitment to making animated movies going forward.” The article also states that the three-year deal that Sony signed with Aardman Animation Studios would not be affected by any sale.
