Sonic The Hedgehog Movie Planned For 2018

by on February 10, 2016

Sega confirmed its plans to release a Sonic the Hedgehog movie today, and mentioned a targeted release date: 2018. This was mentioned during an interview with Hajime Satomi, Sega’s current CEO. The flick will be produced in cooperation with Sony.

“Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live action and animation hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie scheduled for release in 2018,” Satomi said.

Satomi didn’t say anything else beyond that, but the phrase “animation and live-action hybrid” is plenty to chew on for the next few months. Does this mean Sonic is going to have a normal adventure with the usual friends and enemies, only the backgrounds will be real places? Or, in the worse (and more likely) scenario, are they going to frame this film around a bunch of human beings nobody cares about and have them meet Sonic? Will this be little more than a live-action Sonic X? And is Sonic going to have a human girlfriend again?

Let’s hope not: Sega has expressed a renewed commitment to dragging Sonic out of the mire of disrespect, and a bad movie is just going to drag him back down. It’s worth pointing out that fans were more pleased with the recent Sonic Boom TV series than the game of the same name.
