“Secret of Kells” Studio Prepping Animated Feature Set in Afghanistan

Irish animation studio Cartoon Saloon (The Secret of Kells) is beginning work on an animated feature film adaptation of Deborah Ellis’ novel The Breadwinner, which focuses on a young girl named Parvana living in Afghanistan under the Taliban and forced to disguise herself as a boy to earn money for her family when her father is imprisoned for being an intellectual. The screenplay will be written by Ellis and Anita Doron, and directed by Nora Twomey (who co-directed The Secret of Kells with Tomm Moore). The film is a co-production with Canada’s Aircraft Pictures. No targeted release date was mentioned.
