Publishers Weekly on Indie Comics and "Adventure Time," "Regular Show," and More

by on May 16, 2012

Publishers Weekly has posted an article focusing on how recent Cartoon Network shows such as Adventure Time, Regular Show, Superjail, Problem Solverz, and Secret Mountain Fort Awesome are utilizing the skills and aesthetics of independent comics creators to create the shows and give them their distinctive flavors. In the case of Adventure Time specifically, expand the show’s world through the licensed comic book, with Ward granting unprecedented freedom for the licensed book and a staff of renowned indie comics creators providing content for the comic book. In contrast, Regular Show creator J.G. Quintel visits the Artist Alley sections of comic conventions to seek out talent; the show has several Eisner and Ignatz award nominees on staff and also boasts an even gender-divide (vs. the male-dominated staffs of many other animated shows), with artist Minty Lewis also providing the voice for Eileen the Mole.

Longer interviews used for the article have been posted on The Beat weblog with creators Pendleton Ward and J.G. Quintel. In addition. Comics Alliance is hosting a preview of Adventure Time #4 (available on comic book shop stands today).
