PR: Marvel and Sony Expand Production Commitment for Spider-Man Series
LOS ANGELES AND NEW YORK – Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures Television look to bring even more web-slinging animated adventures of Marvel’s legendary Super Hero Spider-Man to television audiences as they have announced plans to increase their production commitment for the new The Spectacular Spider-Man television series. Marvel and SPT have green-lit Culver Entertainment to commence production on an additional 13 half-hour episodes for the series – bringing the current series run to 26 episodes. The initial 13 episodes will premiere in early 2008 on Kids’ WB! on the CW Network, the number-one rated Saturday morning kids broadcast slate.
The new animated series picks up the original web-slinger’s mythology at the beginning of his hero’s journey as a not-so-typical 16-year-old entering his junior year of high school. Peter Parker must conceal his secret identity, confront the multi-leveled pressures of teenage life at home and school, and all the while combat even bigger Super Villains than ever before.
Excitement for the series is already reaching the licensing and retail communities. Spider-Man Merchandising, L.P. – the limited partnership comprised of Marvel Entertainment, Inc. and Sony Pictures Consumer Products Inc., to oversee the licensing and merchandising activities for Columbia Pictures’ Spider-Man™ feature films and animated series based on the Marvel character – is currently in discussions with industry leaders in most major product categories, as well as with key retailers as it builds the merchandising and promotional strategy to introduce this highly-anticipated new Spider-Man brand into the marketplace.
“The launch of the new Spider-Man animated series is part of an aggressive strategy to continue to meet fans’ nearly insatiable demand for our world renowned webslinger,” said Eric Rollman for Spider-Man Merchandising, L.P. “The expanded commitment to the animated series will enable us to really support this exciting new Spider-Man iteration with a multi-tiered consumer products and promotional program that will bring potential licensees and retail partners a fresh and exciting new way to bring this ever-popular Super Hero into the marketplace.”
Robert Oswaks, EVP of Marketing for Sony Pictures Television, added, “Our new animated series has given us this wonderful opportunity to bring the next chapter of Spider-Man to life, both onscreen and in stores. The public has shown an immense commitment to this character, and we are dedicated to staying true to what has made Spider-Man a cultural phenomenon.”
The new series is being produced by Culver Entertainment, a Sony Pictures Television Company. Greg Weisman (Gargoyles, The Batman) is the supervising producer, along with Victor Cook (Hellboy: Blood and Iron and Buzz Lightyear of Star Command), producer/supervising director. The initial episodes of the series will premiere on Kids’ WB! on The CW during the first quarter of 2008.
