PR: Junior Leagues Partner with Cartoon Network to Help Fight Childhood Obesity
Camp Lazlo Characters Featured in PSA and Online Game to Help Kids Learn More About Healthy Eating and Exercise
NEW YORK (March 5, 2007) – The Association of Junior Leagues International (AJLI) is proud to announce a new partnership with Cartoon Network. The Junior Leagues’ KIDS IN THE KITCHEN childhood obesity and nutrition education initiative and Cartoon Network’s GET ANIMATED pro-social, pro-lifestyle movement aim to teach kids the importance of fitness and nutrition. Together, AJLI and Cartoon Network will create a public service announcement featuring Cartoon Network’s Camp Lazlo characters, a Camp Lazlo nutrition and exercise game for the Junior Leagues’ KIDS IN THE KITCHEN website and a Camp Lazlo toolkit for each participating Junior League. Both the new PSA and the interactive online game will launch on Monday, March 5, 2007, in recognition of National Nutrition Month.
“The Cartoon Network and the Junior Leagues have aligned our healthy lifestyle programs as we share the common goal of encouraging children to proactively improve their health with nutritious eating and exercise,” said Sandi Kemmish, president of AJLI. “With our resources and energies combined, we hope to have an even greater impact.”
“The Junior Leagues’ KIDS IN THE KITCHEN program is an ideal complement to Cartoon Network’s overall GET ANIMTED initiative, which serves to empower kids to ‘get active, get healthy and get involved,'” said Turner Entertainment Group President Mark Lazarus. “Junior Leagues’ KIDS IN THE KITCHEN inspires kids to take more active control over their daily eating by learning ways to prepare healthy, favorite foods themselves. Together, these campaigns help kids and their parents achieve healthier lifestyles, which is the overall goal we share.”
The second annual Junior Leagues’ KIDS IN THE KITCHEN program offers parents and children in more than 240 communities across four countries important resources to learn about healthy eating and lifestyle. The Junior Leagues’ KIDS IN THE KITCHEN website features downloadable recipes, tips and other resources to help children lead healthy lives. Each participating Junior League will host programs in their local communities ranging from cooking classes and health fairs to vegetable gardening lessons and grocery store tours.
Launched in February 2005, Cartoon Network’s GET ANIMATED provides on-air, online, print and off-channel programs to teach children the value of a healthy lifestyle including regular exercise, good eating habits and helping others. Featuring the network’s roster of popular cartoon characters, GET ANIMATED currently includes multiple PSAs, a mobile tour, community programs and its award-winning 2006 ‘Rescuing Recess’ initiative.
Cartoon Network animators have enlisted two of its top stars to help inspire kids to learn more about choosing and preparing healthy meals through a fully animated PSA and fun, interactive online game, accessible on the Junior Leagues’ KIDS IN THE KITCHEN website. Lazlo and Raj-cabin-mates, best friends and co-stars of the network’s prime-time hit Camp Lazlo-show how fun but strenuous activities, such as white-water canoeing, require lots of energy derived from “good foods.” Airing nationally starting March 5, the PSA encourages children to log onto the Junior Leagues’ KIDS IN THE KITCHEN website to discover healthy recipes that are fun to make together.
To help kids learn more about making healthy food choices, “Campground Dash” is a challenging online race where players guide Lazlo through Camp Kidney, choosing nutritious snacks along the way to maintain Lazlo’s energy as he runs to the final goal on the map. As they play through 10 increasingly difficult levels, kids can compare their scores to see who avoided unhealthy choices and who succeeded in getting Lazlo to the goal first.
To help inspire active participation in this year’s expanded Junior Leagues’ KIDS IN THE KITCHEN program, Cartoon Network will also send promotional kits to all participating Junior Leagues containing a colorful ‘Camp Lazlo’-inspired oven mitt, five branded silicone measuring cups, a KIDS IN THE KITCHEN logo-embossed mixing bowl and two protective aprons for adult and child.
