After 25 years of using it to make such popular films as “Toy Story” and “Monsters, Inc.”, Pixar has decided to offer its RenderMan 3D software for free. What’s the catch? The free version is for non-commercial use only. [The RenderMan 3D for commercial use still costs $495 to license plus the $200 maintenance fee]. The RenderMan 3D for non-commercial use is fully functional with no watermarks, time restrictions or limited features and is intended for use by students, researchers, institutions, developers and personal use.
Both the free RenderMan 3D for non-commercial use and the not-free RenderMan 3D for commercial use [version 19] are expected to be released in August 2014.
