"Persepolis" Snubbed for Best Foreign Language Oscar Shortlist
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issued the shortlist of nine films eligible for “Best Foreign Language Film.” Notable for its absence is Persepolis, the animated adaptation of Marjane Satrapi’s graphic novel memoir that was a heavy favorite in early Oscar race speculation. The movie is still eligible for a nomination in other categories, including the “Best Animated Feature Film” category and possibly the “Best Picture” category.
In a related story, Chicago’s Daily Herald noted the hopes among Iranian immigrants that Persepolis, in both the graphic novel and film versions, will expand and improve perceptions of Iran among mainstream Americans.
