Remember the PS2’s Okami? Did you know you soon won’t have to drag out an older system to play it?
Capcom revealed today than an updated version of Okami will be released digitally for Playstation 4, XBox One and PC late this year. The classic was initially released in 2006 and has boasted incremental improvements with each successive rerelease. The Wii version added widescreen support. The version released for Playstation 3 shortly after that brought the game’s painted environments into HD. This latest version will add 4K support and the option to play in the original 4:3 aspect ratio. There aren’t many ways to improve on perfection.
Okami was the flagship release of the tragically-short-lived Clover Studio, whose talent moved on to future titles like the Bayonetta series. You played as the sun goddess Amaterasu, sent to the Earth in wolf form and tasked with livening up a colorless ancient landscape. The game was uniquely rendered in the sumi-e style of old Japanese paintings and is like stepping through one. The graphics, despite having aged a decade and change, still look breathtaking.
If you’ve never played Okami before, don’t miss your chance this time. Okami HD comes to Playstation 4, XBox One and PC on December 12, at a price of $19.99.
