NYCC: Frogs and Bucks at Matt Greenfield’s ADV Panel

by on February 25, 2007

ADV's Matt GreenfieldMatt Greenfield’s ADV Panel at the New York Comic Con was largely taken up by a screening of the new Sgt. Frog anime series. The screening began with a parody of NBC’s Heroes before launching into madcap comedy as the Hinata family encounters the frog-like Sgt. Keroro. At the end of the screening, Greenfield would only state that he could not comment on whether or not the show would be airing on Cartoon Network or Adult Swim.

Like many other anime companies, ADV is not committing to any high-definition DVD standard while the format war rages between HD-DVD and BluRay. In some cases, Japanese licensors are even mandating that HD releases must come out on one format or another, depending on which side of the high-definition DVD format war they are on. He stated that HD-DVD and BluRay weren’t selling as well as was hoped, and that the economic situation at this time did not justify the added expense of mastering and pressing high-definition DVDs. However, he added that ADV has been broadcasting in high-definition for 6 years and that re-licensing any of their current properties for HD releases would not be an issue.

Sgt. Frog animeIn addition to Sgt. Frog, ADV is going into production with an anime version of Mutineer’s Moon, based on the series of novels by David Weber. In response to an audience question, ADV is still open to more New Guyver material, but he had nothing new to report on that front. The free downloads of first episodes via the IGN website and on the ADV Universe website has been quite successful for them, and they will continue and expand the program in the future. He also added that ADV has begun shipping boxed sets without volume 1 any more to avoid issues where customers had to re-purchase DVDs after trying and liking the first DVD in the set.

The final element of the panel was an extended video explaining the program of “ADV Bucks,” where anime fans get to “spend the same money twice” by applying money spent on downloads on purchases of DVDs. After the Sgt. Frog preview, a cadre of Frog-suited volunteers burst into the room and showered attendees with con-special ADV Bucks.
