What will happen next in Dark Horse’s Avatar: The Last Airbender continuation series? And what will it look like now that the original team is departing?
Until now the Airbender comics have been written by Gene Luen Yang and illustrated by the artist team Guruhiru. Today EW broke the news that starting next year, Faith Erin Hicks (The Nameless City) and artist Peter Wartman (Over the Wall) will be taking their places.
Hicks couldn’t be more thrilled to land the gig. “Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of my favorite things in the world,” she told the press. “I’m totally not kidding: I remember watching the series finale over ten years ago when I was a struggling animator, wishing I could work on a show that was even ten percent as thoughtful and compelling as Avatar. I was so in love with the world and characters. Even now, there’s nothing that has filled my heart quite like Avatar, and I’m so honored to contribute to the real thing.”
As for what the characters will look like under new artist Wartman….not that different, so cool any prepared outrage. DH shared the new model sheets with the media….
Dark Horse also has a Legend of Korra comic running, which just published its first chapter this summer. While DH’s Avatar comics are produced by hired staff under the guidance of co-creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the Korra comic will continue to be written by DiMartino himself.
