NY Times on Hayao Miyazaki Visit to US for SDCC, Honors

by on July 10, 2009

The New York Times has taken a look at the upcoming visit to the United States by Studio Ghibli’s Hayao Miyazaki (free registration required). Miyazaki will be a guest at the San Diego Comic-Con Internation 2009 on Friday, July 24, 2009, followed by an appearance to receive the University of California, Berkeley Japan Prize. The following week, Miyazaki will attend the United States premiere of his latest movie Ponyo and then be honored by the Association of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (see Toon Zone’s previous coverage here). The article notes Miyazaki’s fever-pitch popularity in the United States even though none of his movies have been box office successes, and speaks to a number of figures in Hollywood and in academia about his art and his influence.
