BTAN's 'UP AND COMING'!
by "Dick Grayson"
Uusually, there's never really any buss around
animated artists unless they are responsible for breaking the mold (Mike Parobeck) or
breaking out into mainstream (Ty Templeton and Rick Burchett), but these two great folks
below are the exception. With the work they have printed under their belt, no matter how
big or small, they have proven that they will be a major part of the naimated, indie, and
mainstream comicscene in the near future. Below are my picks for 'Best Upcoming
Artist' and 'Best Upcoming Writer'. I was able to do a short Q & A session with
the two great fellows who's names wil be very familliar sounding in the near future.
BEST UPCOMING WRITER
Paul Storrie (Batman Beyond #23, upcoming: Justice League Adventures)
1. How would you descibe your upcoming work on
JL Adventures?
Well, working on a book based on a cartoon that
has yet to debut held some interesting challenges. Fortunately, DC was able to
provide details about the way the characters would be portrayed and how they would
interact. Probably the best way to describe my upcoming issue ofJL Adv. is that a battle
against a bizarre new villainess provides J'onn the opportunity to help his teammates
teach his teammates a little something and, in turn, provides an insight into his
character as well.
2. Which leaguer do you enjoy drawing the most? Why?
Now, as a writer, that's a tough one to
answer! J'onn was the most interesting character for me to write, but I'm looking
forward to maybe having the chance to do an issue focusing on Hawkgirl as well. I
really like how the Animated Series have developed her for the show.
3. If you had a chance to work on favourite comic character, how would you approach it?
Let's see - my *favorite* comic book character
(not of my own devising, of course) is Captain America. How would I approach writing
Cap? While being faithful to the exceptional portrayals of the past, I'd like to focus on
the fact that, despite Cap being a man of out his own time, patriotism itself isn't
dated. It is possible to be aware of the way the world works in this day and age and
still believe in America's ideals. Plus, with Cap, you've got to have a ton of
action, with him wading through an army or two of badguys. I think I'd try to craft
a new villain or two for him to battle, guys or gals who are a real challenge for him, a
real counterpoint to him, that DON'T have any connection to facism or the Nazis.
4. Do you see yourself doing this work five
years from now? What do you hope to have worked on by then?
Heck yeah, I see myself doing this work five
years from now! I love writing comics. I'd love to make a full-time career doing them. As
to what I hope to have worked on by then, that's a toughie. If Chuck Dixon ever, ever
needs a fill-in on Nightwing, I'd love to do that. Captian America, obviously. The
Question would be a dream character to work on. An issue (or better yet, a run) on
one of the regular Bat-books. Green Arrow AND Hawkeye. (Hey, I love the
archers!) Certainly I hope, by the time five years have passed, to have a few
creator-owned
projects completed. I've got a couple I'm developing right now.
BEST UPCOMING ARTIST
Min S. Ku (Batman Beyond, Superman Adventures, upcoming: Justice League Adventures)
1.How would you descibe your upcoming work on JL
Adventures?
FUN... it's a hoot to be drawing the coolest
characters in the Bruce Timm style! It's such an honor to be working with some of the best
writers in the industry. I think the readers are in for a treat...I just hope I
don't disappoint in the art department.
2. Which leaguer do you enjoy drawing the most?
Why?
This question should've read "which leaguer
do you enjoy drawing the most except Batman" because it would have to be Batman,
hands down! He's just darn cool! A close second is a toss up between Hawkgirl and
Green Lantern. Hawkgirl's look is so classic (I'm glad they didn't change her look
too much from the early Justice League comics) and she just has this spunk about her; As
for Jon Stewart being the Green Lantern, I love the way the show's creators gave him the
military background...his personality plays off so nicely with the other leaguers!
3.Do you see yourself doing this work five years
from now? What do you hope to have worked on by then? (Both questions answered together).
I hope I'm still drawing comics five years from
now. I feel very blessed to be able to do what I enjoy doing for a living! I've already
drawn THE Justice League, so I'm very content with that accomplishment. I just hope
the Justice League Adventures becomes a hit and that it spins off other animated
titles! I'd still love to see single stand-alone stories, but to keep a sense of
continuity in the spin-off books.
Be on the lookout for these two talents. They
are definatly going places! Min S. Ku currently has an issue of SUPERMAN ADVENTURES on the
stands, and PAUL STORRIE's amazing issue of BATMAN BEYOND is also stil available. Do
yourselves a favor and pick them up!

COMIC REVIEWS
(BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES by Tim "TWO-FACE" Leighton)
(BATMAN BEYOND by Tim "TWO-FACE" Leighton)
(SUPERMAN ADVENTURES by Dick Grayson)
BATMAN: GOTHAM ADVENTURES
ISSUE: "Tuesday Night" (#42)
WRITTEN BY: Scott Peterson
PENCILS: Craig Rousseau
INKS: Dan Davis
COLOURIST: Lee Loughridge
LETTERER: Albert T. Deguzman
COVER ART: Bob Smith, Terry Beatty, and Lee Loughridge
ISSUED: September 5, 2001 (Cover date Nov 2001)
RATING: ***
What a Tuesday night. Even though I prefer
good ol' classic superhero vs supervillain story, I commend Scott Peterson on writing a
tale focusing on a normal night of simple patrol for Batman and Robin. I'm writing
this on the night of when the World Trade Centre was attacked (09-11), so I couldn't help
but draw the parrallels between that and the Dynamic Duo's search and rescue efforts in a
city ablaze in this issue.
Peterson's minimal dialogue was great, but had
it not been for the fabulous visuals by Craig Rousseau and Dan Davis, the issue wouldn't
have been nearly as effective. Fire is a beautiful (but deadly) thing, and this
issue proved that on both counts.
I was hoping we'd get to see Firefly be the
culprit rather than a computer glitch and sun flares, but just like the tragedy that
befell in the U.S. (and the free world) today, sometimes grand-scale chaos comes from the
faceless, the unknown.
Who knew that I'd ever get this much out of what
I originally thought would be just a simple little fire-fighting tale. Kudos to
everyone involved with .
Have a quiet, peaceful Tuesday Night everyone,
wherever you may be.
