Top Performers at 2010 Summer Box Office Are 3-D Animated Films

Variety has noted that the top box-office hits in the summer of 2010 were 3-D kids' animated movies (Toy Story 3, Shrek Forever After, How to Train Your Dragon, and Despicable Me), with Toy Story 3 being the most successful movie so far this summer with a $403.8 million domestic take and global ticket sales of $984.3 million.

The number of successful animated films this year is an anomaly, and box office results also show that animated 3-D movies have drawn a more reliable audience than live-action 3-D movies. DreamWorks Animation's offerings (Shrek Forever After and How to Train Your Dragon) also defied conventional box office wisdom by having sustained runs at the box office after opening weekends that most analysts considered disappointing.
