• Before Venkman or Egon, before Jake or Eddie, there were the REAL Real Ghostbusters: the 1975 Saturday Morning show by the same title that had no relation to the 1984 movie! The Ghostbuster name was originally worn by two bumbling fools and a man in a gorilla suit? Now that's scary!

From a Press Release:

For the first time since 1995, Cartoon Network achieved first place in total day household ratings (1.3, tied with Nickelodeon) among all ad-supported cable networks for the week of June 11-17. The network also won the weekly ratings race for key kid demos and tied for first place (with Nickelodeon) with tweens 9-14. In fact, ratings and delivery for kids 6-11 and kids 2-11 set new weekly network records. Tweens 9-14 also hit a new total day delivery record. In addition, household delivery charted its highest marks in network historyPosting another strong week in prime time, Cartoon Network finished the third week of June tied for second place (with Lifetime) with a 1.8 household rating. Compared to the same time period last year, household ratings were unchanged, while kids 6-11 ratings increased 17 percent and kids 2-11 ratings rose 7 percent. Delivery also increased 16 percent with households, 28 percent with kids 6-11 and 17 percent with kids 2-11. Importantly, 14 Cartoon Network prime time programs charted among the top 50 basic cable ad-supported programs last week.

Programming highlights for the week include The Powerpuff Girls' Father's Day "Papathon" (Sunday, June 17, 12-7 p.m.), a salute to Cartoon Network's most popular pop, Professor Utonium, who created the superhero trio, Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup. Compared to the same time period last year, the marathon posted a dramatic 92 percent ratings increase in tweens 9-14, while delivery more than doubled, from 197,000 to 418,000 viewers. A total of 7,590,000 different viewers tuned into the Father's Day special.

Along with the network's record numbers, CartoonNetwork.com continues to post increases across the board. For the month of May '01, the Web site received 2,583,000 total unique visitors, up 133 percent vs. May '00. For the third consecutive month, CartoonNetwork.com beat Nick.com, in May by 625,000 more unique visitors. Additionally, year to year, average time spent on site per person (stickiness) improved by 13 minutes and 30 seconds (from 25:30 to 39:00), outperforming Nick.com by 13 minutes and 6 seconds (Media Metrix).

Preliminary reports for June indicate strong numbers, due in part to the Web site's collaboration with recording artists Sugar Ray as well as a promotion with the Kids' WB in Cartoon Orbit, the Web site's online community for kids.

Cartoon Network, currently seen in 73.1 million U.S. homes and 145 countries around the world, is Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.'s 24-hour, ad-supported cable service offering the best in animated entertainment. Drawing from the world's largest cartoon library, Cartoon Network also showcases unique original ventures such as Sheep in the Big City, Courage the Cowardly Dog, Mike, Lu & Og, The Powerpuff Girls, Ed, Edd n Eddy, Johnny Bravo, Cow and Chicken, Dexter's Laboratory and Cartoon Cartoons. Since its launch in 1992, Cartoon Network has remained one of ad-supported cable's highest-rated networks. Cartoon Network's Web site is located at http://CartoonNetwork.com.

Turner Broadcasting System, Inc., an AOL Time Warner company, is a major producer of news and entertainment product around the world and the leading provider of programming for the basic cable industry.
