Review: 'Tweety's High-Flying Adventure'
Brainatra
Tues Sep 26 18:31:56 2000

Had one typed out before, but left it on another disk, so here goes:

I would've been better off *with* using the free rental on "Erin Brokovich"...this film seems geared towards children in the manner of other KWB shows of late, even moreso than S&TM was.

SPOILERS, I Guess...

The plot, as you may recall, involves Granny making a bet with Col. Rimfire (here with a grey mustache; I thought it was red) that Tweety can fly around the world in 80 days, in order to save a London park from closing. Tweety must also collect 80 pawprints in his passport from various cats he encounters in the various countries. Along the way, Tweety encounters the one new character, a Tibetian female canary named Aaoogah, must dodge both the various felines *and* the pursuing Sylvester, and runs into more Looney Tunes cameos than there were people watching the final episode of "The Fugitive" (everyone from Dr. Jekyll from "Hide and Go Tweet" to a really-badly-voiced Bugs [with just one line] to an even more badly voiced Henery Hawk [who sounds a lot like Tweety in this flick] to Ralph Phillips).

As stated before, the plot was barely existent, and most of the gags felt even softer than the ones on S&TM; no explosions, guns (though Yosemite Sam shows up), or such here...though also, fortunately for me, no scenes of Hector beating up Sylvester every two seconds. It was the first time I could think of that I labelled a cartoon with the Looney Tunes as "sedate"...the number of gags that were actually amusing were few and in between...also only one or two adult-oriented pop culture references in the whole thing
...

The animation was done by Koko, which did the usual S&TM-esque job on this film (though with slightly more detailed backgrounds). The voices, as stated before, seemed a bit off for various characters...Yosemite Sam was done adequately, though Foghorn sounded to me a bit off (though not as badly off as in that S&TM episode he was in). Rocky (the gangster)'s voice sounded rather deeper than what I recalled it being; Bugs and Henery's voices were the worst-sounding of this film.

We also get a few songs, none of which were memorable...we also get various gags centered around extreme sports (such as a bizarre scene of Taz and Sylv on a mountain bike chasing Tweety and his girlfriend...). Guess the execs figured "kids think extreme sports are cool, so let's throw some of that in!" to get it to sell...a few other scenes left me scratching my head (such as an all-cat casino in Vegas...don't ask).

All in all, I'd probably have been better off getting something else :-) Kids might like it (if they like S&TM), but other than LT enthusiasts/collectors, there's not much about it to recommend to anyone else...

For beepbeep (& any other LT fans here), the list of LT's who show up in this film off the top of my head (left my complete list at home): Granny, Tweety, Sylvester, Col. Rimfire, Cool Cat, Daffy, Bugs, Penelope, Pepe Le Pew, a camel wearing a fez (is he an old character?), Ralph Phillips (with a British accent), Dr. Jekyll (from "Hide and Go Tweet"), some British-accented thug (from some old cartoon where Daffy plays Sherlock Holmes?), Hubie, Bertie, Speedy Gonzales (nonspeaking...don't think he's spoken since that bit part he had in that one TTA episode 10 years ago), Hector, Yosemite Sam, the gravelly voiced Lion from that 40's-era Bugs Bunny cartoon ("you call yourself king of the jungle?"), Pete Puma, Lola Bunny, Pussyfoot, Foghorn Leghorn, Miss Prissy, Henery Hawk, Egghead Jr., Yosemite Sam, the Tasmanian Devil, various cats resembling the "Birds Anonymous" leader, an all-grey, bushy-cheeked cat with a pink nose (from an old LT?), Rocky, Muggsy, Marvin the Martian.

Characters not seen (among others): the Road Runner, Porky, Elmer Fudd, "Babbit and Catstello" (odd given the aforementioned "kitty casino" scene and the excessive cameo size already), any modern WB cartoon character.

Songs by Randy Rogel, written and/or directed (can't recall) by Tom Minton.
