(REVIEWS) 'Static Shock' # 03 / 'Batman Beyond' # 38 (SPOILERS)

'Static’ has still failed to really capture me...they’re running the “Boom Babies” thing into the ground way too quickly (usually elements originating in the first episode aren’t confronted again until later in the first season, with a bunch of nonrelated episodes stuck in the middle, to give the series some diversity). All the plots thus far have seemed like “Batman Beyond Lite”--the same sort of ideas and situations, but not quite as deep or dimensional. That, and it's hard to take a jive-talking villain seriously (“If you're not down with us, you're on top of our list.”). Although I guess it beats that fire-headed guy (who really should invest in a belt...).
Last week’s episode: only two things to note. First, I thought that educational segment at the end was *REALLY* tacked-on...and second, the projectile wieners were sorta cool, in a stupid way. This series has so many absurd elements, it should play that up more. I mean, we have a kid flying around on a trash can lid clogging up fire hydrants with the rolled-up roof of a police car. They can’t be serious.
As for this week, by now the whole “some acquaintance of the hero’s becomes a freaky mutant and falls in with the wrong crowd” thing has been done to death. As usual, not terrible, but pretty dull and predictable. Also thought his new fold-up foil board reminded me of Kit Cloudkicker from the old TaleSpin show...

As for BB…thought last week’s episode had some pretty nice character development for Inque…even she has a soft side. Knowing what led her to sell her body to science was both intriguing and touching. Allows one to see her in a very different light. And the kid was absolutely despicable. Kudos to the producers on another winner. Very spooky ending.
This week’s: Very nice…we’ve heard of Terry’s past as a “trouble child” and his time in juvie before, but this ep fleshes that out a lot more. We learn how he got in with the wrong crowd, and that it was around the time of his parents’ breakup. Charlie was a very interesting character, and the crummy way everyone besides Terry treated him made his using Terry all the more ironic and tragic. Exciting fight scenes, nice use of Max and Dana, and…well, Bruce was a bit underused. But considering the focus he’s received in other episodes this season (and in the upcoming RotJ), I guess we can forgive that. All in all, this episode and last week’s “Inqueling” ep were a nice recovery from the mediocre “Untouchable,” and boost my hopes for this season even higher. Although I’ll agree with Belch that the ending was rather unsatisfying…“Terry looks on as the baddie’s taken away and reflects on things” seems to be the default ending for BB episodes ever since “Dead Man’s Hand.” Still, quite good. Noted that Tom Ruegger worked on the Story for this episode with Robert Goodman. Nice to see TR back to working on the Bat-shows (not by choice I’d assume…he’s claimed to prefer comedy work. But I guess there’s not a lot of that being turned out by WBA these days…).
