This morning Disney put out a brand-new trailer for Cars 3. This one is the most revealing trailer yet, in that we actually see the cars’ faces, not everything is in shadow, and we even get a few jokes. This stands in stark contrast to the disturbing way this movie has been promoted over the previous few months, with repeated shots of Lightning suffering a serious injury in slow-motion. That shot is still here, but now it’s more clear what it means.
Lightning is getting older and wearing down, and each time he crashes on the racetrack, his chassis gets further away from its peak condition. He only has a limited number of races left in him, and with younger competition in his face, he’s got to make his final trips around the track count.
Blindsided by a new generation of blazing-fast racers, the legendary Lightning McQueen (voice of Owen Wilson) is suddenly pushed out of the sport he loves. To get back in the game, he will need the help of an eager young race technician, Cruz Ramirez, with her own plan to win, plus inspiration from the late Fabulous Hudson Hornet and a few unexpected turns. Proving that #95 isn’t through yet will test the heart of a champion on Piston Cup Racing’s biggest stage!
Is this truly the end of the road for the Cars gravy train, or will it merely be replaced by another spinoff? Time will tell, but for now, Lightning’s story appears to be wrapping up on June 16.
