Hire extra guards for the Mona Lisa and keep an eye on Mount Rushmore in case any noses go missing…the world’s greatest thief is coming out of retirement. Carmen Sandiego officially has a new cartoon series in production.
Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) will voice the iconic character, first seen in 90’s school computer labs across the country before having her name splashed across two simultaneous programs, a PBS game show and a Fox Kids cartoon. Now veteran action-toon showrunner Duane Capizzi is handling a new series produced by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt and DHX Media (DHX’s predecessor, DiC, brought us the 90’s Carmen cartoon). A full season of 20 episodes has been ordered.
Backing Carmen up will be the disembodied voice of the Player (implied to be the guy playing the game she’s in), voiced by Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things). This new show is said to be an origin story for Carmen, following a younger version of herself across the globe as she learns her tricks. If the description is correct, this would be the first Carmen Sandiego series that follows Carmen herself and not the detectives trying to track her down.
An origin story for Carmen does exist. According to Wikipedia, “She was an ace detective for the ACME Detective Agency who found catching criminals too easy and decided that outsmarting ACME itself would make for greater challenges. This origin story was consistently maintained for over a decade, with one of the protagonists of Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? Treasures of Knowledge being Carmen’s former partner.”
Is this the story the new show is going to tell? We’re going to have to wait quite a while to find out. Netflix’s Carmen Sandiego isn’t scheduled to be completed until 2019.
Oh, and in case this isn’t stuck in your head already…..
